On the Road with Fujifilm Instax Mini 8

July 30, 2016

I actually took photography in university. For four years. Four years spent developing film and chasing the perfect shot. The quite expensive perfect shot, given the amount I've spent on materials back then. I was excited when I was able to get my first digital camera, knowing how easier things will be. But now I realised that "easier" takes the magic out of it. Completely.

My trip to Europe had me fall back in love with photography, the way it was meant to be - light hitting film and film becoming a stolen moment. It almost feels like I brought back pieces of light from all the places I have visited.

I picked up an Instax Mini with my first paycheck from my new job and it has made me happier than any other purchases I have made in a while. My new travel companion had me smiling ear to ear from the pristine beaches on the Greek islands to the museums of Barcelona and the quiet streets of Kingston. I'm sorry Instagram, I have fallen in love with someone else. But we can still be friends.

The pictures look far from perfect, but I think that's one of the things that makes me love them even more. There is something natural in their flaws, an aesthetic that I can try to endlessly reproduce with all the VSCO filters I can buy, but never actually hit the spot quite right. Photo albums suddenly seem like a good idea. Do they still sell those?

Have a brilliant day!
